D-NETWORKING

With 1 in 5 Australians experiencing major depression at some time in their lives, there are literally hundreds of thousands of people who live with depression - either personally or through a family member or friend.  There are few conditions in Australia that cause the suffering, pain, and destruction of relationships, lives, to as many people as depression. It is a condition that will affect us all at some time in our lives either personally or through someone we love.

We are the people who truly understand what it is to live with depression, the issues and challenges. The good news is that this means that we have the power and motivation to shine a light for others... all we need is the opportunity to connect with each other!

By depression-Networking together, supporting and encouraging each other we can shine a light on depression in our homes, our workplaces and our communities and create a culture where
there is no stigma of depression
all who suffer depression seek and find the help and support they need...
and we will know that together, we - Australians living with depression - did it!

Our 2006 Fundraising Campaign is NOW ON!
To raise much needed funds to support our core service!
depressioNet provides the only focused, 24 hour information, help and peer support service that is available to all Australians, anywhere, anytime.
With thanks to the support of so many people like us people like YOU last year, depressioNet received a grant from the federal department of Health & Ageing to support improvements to the core service to ensure quality, accuracy and safety continues as the number of people living with depression who come to depressioNet each year grows. However the funds from the Federal Government cannot be used to cover any of the core costs of providing the depressioNet service. We, people like us, need to find or create the financial support needed to ensure that depressioNet is available to all now and into the future.

Visit our D-Day Home Page to help make it happen!

dNetworking Activities
There are a host of things that each of us can do to help depressioNet to shine a light on depression.

The first step can be to become a formal Friend of depressioNet

  • Give or email the invitation to others who may like to help to shine a light on depression!

    Let people know about depressioNet

  • Download the depressioNet flyer and send to everyone you know.
  • Contact us and we can send you flyers and/or wallet cards to distribute in your community so that people know depressioNet.com.au is here for them when they need.
  • Sell depressioNet Butterfly Pins and Carry Bags at work, school, sporting and social clubs!

  • Send the O Happy Day postcards to people to brighten their day and let them know that depressioNet.com.au and the Team behind the screens are here for them when they need us

    Get depressioNet.com.au into the media
By dNetworking we can get depressioNet 'out there' so people know depressioNet.com.au is here for them without needing to spend vital $ on promotion.

  • Write (or email!) a 'letter to the editor' letting them know about depressioNet and the service we provide. Direct them to our media center for more information.
  • Write an article for a paper, magazine or newsletter. This is a great way of getting depressioNet.com.au into the media! You can submit these for publication personally or send them to the Team and we can submit them for you.
  • Keep an eye out for articles on depression. If they don't mention depressioNet.com.au as a resource, email the journalist to let them know about depressioNet - so that next time they know to include us! Similarly for radio and TV programs. You can base it on our example.

Participate in media & other depression awareness programs

  • For those who are comfortable speaking publicly about their experiences, this is a fabulous way to shine a light on depression! It helps both to reduce the stigma of depression and to let people know about depressioNet.com.au. We often get requests from Media who are doing a story on depression and are looking for people who are happy to be interviewed to give the story that powerful 'personal' touch. We are setting up a register so that when requests such as this come through, we have a list of people we can contact to see if they are interested. Join our register
  • Attend a Rotary Community Forum and set up a depressioNet booth (we will provide the information).
  • Offer to speak about your experiences with depression - at depression forums, to community groups, etc.

    Help In Your Area (HIYA)

  • Let us know about any good resources for people with depression in your area - so we can share it with others in the depressioNet.com.au Help In Your Area section. Support groups, 'depression friendly' GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists... anything or anyone you have found helpful!

    Fundraising

  • Help out with fundraising for depressioNet - see our fundraising ideas page.
  • Join the fundraising mailing list.

    Other?

  • Any suggestions, please let us know so we can share them here!

Hold an Event/ Conduct a Project

  • In June 2005 the NSW Doctors Orchestra, 'Musicus Medicus', held a fundraising concert in support of depressioNet!
  • Run a ‘design a depression awareness poster’ competition in your school, workplace, etc and send them through for us to share with others - or simply design a depressioNet poster that we can take to events and that people can put up.
