The Happiness Institute Opens In Australia
4th March 2004
MEDIA RELEASE

Australia’s first ever clinic devoted solely to teaching people how to be happy has opened in Sydney. The Happiness Institute is one of the first clinics of its kind in the world and practices one of the most exciting breakthroughs in contemporary health care – positive psychology.

There is a big movement on the physical side of health and wellbeing with the emergence of gyms, juice bars and health food shops, but not on the psychological side. The Happiness Institute combines both to provide a total holistic answer.

Founder and Director of The Happiness Institute, Dr Timothy Sharp says, “For most of the last century, clinical psychology has focused on helping people who are sick to feel normal. As important as this is, it doesn’t go far enough and it doesn’t address all the needs of the many people who want a better life.

“The Happiness Institute is about teaching people to be really, really happy as opposed to just not depressed. There are basic principles to happiness, which can be taught and learnt, and the Happiness Institute will focus on these. Rather than wait for someone to fall off the cliff and be there to pick them up, we want to build a fence around the top.”

We will run courses teaching people how to apply the principles of positive psychology and happiness. These courses can be delivered to large audiences, smaller workshop groups, and individuals, including: nutrition, sleep, optimistic thinking, good quality relationships, life purpose, and life control.

Dr. Sharp notes that from years of clinical work he has discovered that almost everyone can be much happier than they currently are.

“The good news is that we now have a range of simple, but proven and effective strategies to help people feel great fast. We intend to be a world leader in happiness research, the results of which will be fed back in to our programs so that our services remain at the forefront of happiness and wellness services offered around the world.”

The Happiness Institute is staffed by highly qualified professionals and the programs are all based on the most up to date psychological and medical research. Based initially and primarily in Sydney, The Happiness Institute expects to offer its services nationally within the next 6-12 months.
